Bölüm 328: Tanrınıza dua edin ve ona sorun.
"Because I care about you, you idiot." Teacher Newton sighed, resting her forehead against Theophane’s shoulder. "I've watched you grow up. You think you're smart, but you're playing a dangerous game with monsters you don't understand. Cassius isn't just a talented student. He's... something else."
"Everyone is something else to someone else." Theophane gently stroked the silver braids. "I am not looking to kill him, Teacher. I simply need to retrieve something that belongs to my family. That maid holds the key."
"A key soaked in blood." Teacher Newton pulled back, her blue eyes searching Theophane’s white ones. "The maid is dead."
Theophane paused, her hand freezing mid-stroke. "Dead?"
"Died last night," Teacher Newton said grimly, walking back to the operating table and tossing her stained coat into a disposal bin. "Copycat found her. Brought her straight to me, demanding a resurrection. Can you believe the audacity? As if I'm a goddess who can pull souls back from the abyss on a whim."
"Did she stay dead?"
"For about three hours," Teacher Newton muttered, turning back to the table and flipping a switch.
A low hum vibrated through the room, and the stainless steel surface of the table slid aside, revealing a descent into a deeper, colder chamber below. A faint, ethereal blue light spilled upward, carrying the scent of absolute frost and formaldehyde.
"She's down there?" Theophane asked.
"Recovering. Or rotting. Hard to tell with the methods I had to use." Teacher Newton descended the metal stairs first, gesturing for Theophane to follow. "Copycat didn't leave her side until an hour ago. He threatened to flay me alive if she didn't wake up by tomorrow."
Theophane followed closely, her expression darkening slightly. "Copycat made threats to you?"
"Oh, he's a little terror, just like his mother. But he has reason to be desperate." Teacher Newton reached the bottom of the stairs, stepping into a vast, cavernous basement lined with rows of glass cylinders filled with glowing green fluid. "That maid... she isn't human. Not truly. And neither is whatever is inside her mind."
In the center of the room lay a single medical bed.
A young woman with pale skin and messy black hair lay motionless upon it, her chest rising and falling in agonizingly slow intervals. A thick cable ran from the back of her neck into a massive rune-carved terminal that buzzed with erratic static.
Theophane walked over to the bed, her white eyes narrowing as she looked down at the unconscious maid.
"Her name is Elena," Theophane murmured.
"Was," Teacher Newton corrected, leaning against the terminal and crossing her arms. "Her soul was severed when she died. Whatever brought her back... it wasn't medicine. It was sheer, stubborn will, and a foreign energy I couldn't identify. It felt ancient. Almost divine."
Theophane reached out, her fingertips hovering just above Elena’s forehead. A faint aura of translucent light bloomed around her hand, probing the air for residual signatures.
Suddenly, Elena’s eyes flew open.
They weren't human eyes. They were pools of swirling, abyssal black, devoid of whites or pupils, staring directly through Theophane into something far beyond this room.
Teacher Newton gasped, taking a sharp step back. "She shouldn't be conscious for another twelve hours!"
Elena’s lips parted, a voice scraping out like grinding stones, dry and hollow, echoing with a strange, multi-layered resonance.
"You seek the lost thread."
Theophane didn't flinch. She maintained her composure, her divine eyes locking onto the abyssal gaze of the maid. "I seek what was taken from the Celeste family vault."
A harsh, grating sound escaped Elena’s throat—a sound that might have been laughter if it had any warmth.
"The vault is dust. The thief is crowned. And the god you pray to..." Elena’s head tilted at an impossible, unnatural angle, her neck snapping with a sickening pop that made Teacher Newton wince. "...is already bleeding."
Theophane's expression hardened. "Whose voice are you using?"
Elena slowly raised a pale, trembling hand, pointing a single finger directly at Theophane’s chest. The air around the room pressure-dropped instantly, the glass cylinders vibrating violently as the monitors began to shriek in high-pitched warning alarms.
"Pray to your god," the maid whispered, the void in her eyes expanding until it consumed her entire face in shadow, "and ask him why he left you behind."
The monitors flatlined in unison.
The lights flickered, plunged the basement into absolute darkness, save for the faint, terrifying glow of the abyss in Elena’s eyes.
"Seni sevdiğim için." dedi Öğretmen Newton; güçlü ama çaresiz çıkan sesiyle onun yanağını kavrayarak, "Beni parmağında oynatıyorsun, Theophy. Seni seviyorum ve ölmeni istemiyorum."
'Ama senin isteyip istememene bakmaksızın her türlü öleceğim.' diye geçirdi içinden Theophane.
"Ölmeyeceğim." diye yalan söyledi parlak bir gülümsemeyle, "Ve Océane'ı, Cassius'un hizmetçisini de öldürmeyeceğim."
"Öyleyse ne?"
"Sadece zihnine girmek istiyorum." dedi, "onunla konuşmak istiyorum, zihin alanının içinde. Bu da ancak senin yardımınla mümkün."
Öğretmen Newton’ın yüzü endişeyle gölgelendi, "Bu zor olacak. Öğretmen Helene Mars neredeyse her zaman Océane'ın odasının etrafında.
"Hangisi?"
Theophane odadan dışarı adım atarken, o nazik, kırık, acı dolu sesi arkasında asılı kalmaya devam etti, "Neden ben?"
